News items relating to religious tolerance and information

2009-February

We also have a list of religious intolerance news for this month.
Sad to say, these are usually much longer lists.

bullet2009-FEB: North America: Psychology of Religion and Spirituality journal launched: The American Psychological Association is expected to launch a new quarterly journal that will publish peer-reviewed articles that explore the psychological aspects of religion and spirituality. Ralph Piedmont, a professor of pastoral counseling at Loyola College in Maryland and president of the APA's psychology of religion division will be the editor. 1

bullet2009-FEB-17: CO: Hindu prayer read in House of Representatives: Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, read Sanskrit mantras from ancient Hindu scriptures before the Colorado House of Representatives. "Reciting from Bhagavad-Gita, he urged Representatives to keep the welfare of others always in mind."2

bullet2009-FEB-21: USA: Who is admired enough to be called a hero? A Harris poll asked 2,634 Americans who they admired enough to call a hero. President Obama was first on the list, just ahead of Jesus. Next were Mahatma Gandhi, George Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, Abraham Lincoln, John McCain, John F. Kennedy, Chesley Sullenberger -- the U.S. Airways pilot who landed a plane in the Hudson River, --  Mother Teresa, God, Hillary Clinton, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Condoleezza Rice. 3
bullet2009-FEB-23: Atlantis: Claims that Atlantis has been found: After Google started to map the world's ocean floors, it was inevitable that folks would search for the long-lost and probably mythical city of Atlantis. A British aeronautical engineer, Bernie Bamford, said: "It looks like an aerial map of Milton Keynes. It must be man-made." It is situated a few hundred miles northwest of the western-most Canary Islands off of the coast of Africa. According to Daily Tech:

"Plato had said that Atlantis was 620 miles of Africa's coast, past the Canary Islands.  He wrote that the land was home to advanced civilization before earthquake and floods sunk it into the sea around 9,700BC ? nearly 12,000 years ago." 4,5
